Community Helpers

Oh what fun to pretend to be grownup! All of our centers will be filled with activities relating to Valentine’s Day and occupations. In the Music Center we will sing “Johnny Works with One Hammer” while pounding rhythm instruments, in the Language Center we will sort valentines by color and match pictures of community helpers, in Dramatic Play Center we will wear worker hats and use pretend tools and practice wrapping and rocking the baby and folding the laundry. In the Gross Motor Center we will jump over the rungs of a ladder lying on the floor and we will be bricklayers constructing a wall we can hide behind in the Block Area. We will celebrate Groundhog Day by practice being in and out of the ground hog’s hole. Weather permitting, they will take the wagon for a walk and pick up trash on the playground and in the neighborhood. We will create a masterpiece of art with what trash we find as we investigate the responsibilities of the sanitation workers.

Do you make a product or provide a service? That’s the question we will ask as we sort, graph, and count our parent cut-outs this week. The children will make and send Valentines of appreciation to city officials and utility companies and police and fire departments as we recognize the services they provide to us.

Daily activities and updates are sent directly to parents through our ProCare app.

Skill Goal Focus

Beginners will be given many opportunities to practice verbally identifying facial features and to point to other body parts.  They will use three to six piece puzzles and match objects to pictures of objects.  The youngsters will focus much of their efforts on learning to dress themselves.  This is important in developing independence and self-esteem.

Preschool children will focus on personal safety practices.  We will emphasize teaching information children need for their own protection if lost or kidnapped.  They will be learning their own full names, their parents' names, addresses and phone numbers.  They will learn how to call 911 and give emergency information.  Care will be taken to teach these skills without frightening the children.  We will also use the Community Helper theme to work on some self-help skills such as recognition of body parts and dressing skills.  Children who are ready will work on recognizing the alphabet and other pre-reading skills.
