Help Us Keep Your Children Safe

TTLC works very hard to see that everything within the school is as safe as we can make it, but we have a few problems with which we need parental cooperation…

Recently we seem to have a rash of children bringing money to school with them. Coins can present a serious choking danger to young children. Even if your child is old enough to know that money should not be put in the mouth, there are younger children enrolled who do not know this. By the time we are aware that children are playing with money brought from home it could be too late. Please be even more careful than usual in checking what children bring into school.

Another problem is with medicine brought to school. We are glad to give necessary medications for which we have appropriate instructions and authorizations but all medicines must be treated with a great deal of caution. Some children get their daily vitamin in the morning just before they leave for school, but instead of chewing it, we may find it in pockets or being played with later on in the day. We have also become aware that some of our parents routinely keep fever relievers and other over-the-counter medicines handy in the diaper bags. We cannot take precautions for medicines when we are not aware that they are available. Please do not put anything in the diaper bag which you could not safely put out for the children. Only parents should carry medicine into the building, and medicines should be handed personally to the teacher, not put down on a counter or shelf.

One final problem is with smoking parents who accidently drop match books or lighters on their way into the building and those who routinely discard their cigarette butts near the entrance. Picking up interesting things and putting them in your pocket or your mouth is how children learn. But with matches, lighters and cigarette butts, the learning could be dangerous or disastrous. Perhaps some of you don’t realize that the nicotine in a single cigarette, if eaten by a child under two, could cause death.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Our Theme in JANUARY

With TRANSPORTATION as a theme the children will classify air, land, and water transportation; learn transportation terms; become alert to many different and unusual methods of transportation and to people who use specialized forms of transportation.  The children will have a “homework assignment” for this unit, we would like them to cut out pictures of transportation to bring in for our bulletin boards.  Their assignment includes cleaning up any mess they may make cutting.

Skill Goal Focus in JANUARY

Focused language skills this month will include patterns and vocabulary including opposites, placement words, rhymes and personal and standard sight words.  In the area of math, children will be working with money and on number recognition.  Children will become more aware of themselves as they work on recognizing and naming body parts and becoming more independent in dressing themselves from putting on their own shoes and socks to buttoning and zipping their coats.  To develop both fine and gross motor skills, children will work with puzzles and balls.
