Our unit this month will expose the children to fanciful tales of giants. Usually they are portrayed in fairy tales as being rather violent and not very nice. We, of course, explain that this sort of giant is just pretend, but, some people are bigger than others. Alton is the home of a real giant. Robert Wadlow, the tallest man that ever lived, was known as the gentle giant. He was born and raised in Alton, Illinois. Plan a family field trip to the Alton Museum of History and Art, located on the SIU School of Dental Medicine Campus on College Avenue. It is open 11 A.M. – 3 P.M. Thursday through Saturday and 1 – 4 P.M. on Sundays. The children will enjoy the display relating to Robert Wadlow, including the life size poster, his ring and shoe to try on and his school desk to sit in. To finish off the day, stop across the street at the life size statue of Robert Wadlow.
