The Junie B. Jones series by Barbara Park is a great way to captivate children’s attention and get them hooked on reading.  Start reading them out loud and pretty soon children will be reading for themselves to find out what happens next.  The first book in the series is Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus.   Junie B. is a rascally mischievous kid who loves to yell at the top of her voice.  On the first day of kindergarten she is horrified to find out that she is expected to ride the loud and smelly school bus.  During her adventures throughout the day she makes friends and enjoys exciting adventures, but when it is time to ride the bus home June hides in the supply closet to avoid the loud smelly bus.  Finally, to prevent wetting her pants, she has to sneak out to go to the bathroom.  Imagine her distress when she finds the bathroom doors locked.  She tries to get out to go home and is dismayed to find that the exit doors are also locked.  Pulling the fire alarm seems like a good solution until the fire department arrives.  All ends happily when, in the midst of all the confusion, her mom finally arrives to see her safely home.
